Religious Identity & Mission

21.11.19

Dear Families,

In Week 5, we celebrated Woods Week. To officially open our week, Father Peter celebrated a whole school Mass, led by Year 1/2S.  The Mass is our official start to Woods Week and celebrates the life of Father Julian Tenison Woods. In his Homily, Fr Peter spoke about Fr Woods love of learning and how we too can share the gifts that God has given to us to inspire a love of learning in others.

Inspired by Fr Woods love of learning, it was wonderful to see the artistic expressions of our community evolve into nine unique framed mosiac artworks with related aspects of his life. The artworks are designed to be displayed throughout the school.  The purpose of this whole school activity was to create a consistent and visible presence of Fr Julian Tenison Woods, inspire our young learners to pursue their interests and to celebrate the co-founder and name sake of our community.

To acknowledge and commission these artworks, we were very appreciative to have our special guest Sr Mary Cresp SJ representing the Sisters of Saint Joseph visit each class.  The children enthusiastically shared their learning and artistic experiences and Sr Mary presented each class with a framed image to compliment their artwork's chosen aspect of life.  Following Sr Mary Cresp's visit, we gathered together in the Beehive and Fr Peter blessed our nine framed mosaics and accompanying gifts from Sr Mary Cresp ready for display in each of the classrooms.

Flora McDonald Retirement Community

Year 2/3TD, 3/4T and 5/6P students visited the residents at Flora McDonald Retirement Centre throughout Woods Week to engage in intergenerational activities. The activities were designed to create an experience of service for others and enhance our historical connection with Flora McDonald. The activities included playing simple games and Christmas art.  This week, RN, RG, R/1K and 1/2S also visited Flora McDonald for a picture book reading and to perform some Christmas carols.

In the spirit of Father Julian Tension Woods and Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, it is always wonderful to see our students brighten the residents day with their contagious smiles and laughter in a way that  is responsive to the needs of others in our community. On behalf of all the staff, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude for the support of many parents who generously volunteered their time to make our Woods Week local walks and Week 6 excursion possible.

Advent

Advent is the season of new beginnings, 1 December marks the First Sunday of Advent and Sunday December 22nd marks the Fourth Sunday of Advent. During the season of Advent, the Church altar is dressed in the liturgical colour purple. Each Sunday at Mass, a candle is lit on an Advent wreath reflecting a different theme for the week. The first candle is purple and focuses on ‘hope’ - hope for a new beginning. The second candle is purple and focuses on ‘peace’ - Jesus the Prince of Peace. The third candle is pink and focuses on ‘joy’ - the joy that the birth brings. The fourth candle is purple and focuses on ‘love’ – our love for God and others.

2019 Christmas Appeals

REN, REG, R/1K, 1/2S,  Christmas Donations

In 2018, donations offered to Moore Street Day Centre were distributed to over 6000 people. This Christmas, with community support, Moore Street intend to deliver more than 2,500 Christmas hampers to needy families all over Adelaide! To support Moore Street in 2019, we are inviting families from REN, REG, R/1K, 1/2S classes to support in filling Moore Street’s hampers with non-perishable foods and inexpensive gifts.

Year 2/3TD, Year 3/4T and Year 5/6P Christmas Donations

In 2018, St Vincent De Paul, provided over 4,000 gifts to children and young adults who would otherwise not have had a gift to open on Christmas Day. Vinnies also provided over 2,600 food hampers to families to ensure they could celebrate the festive season with a sense of dignity. To support Vinnies in 2019, we are inviting families from Year 2/3TD, 3/4T and 5/6P to assist in filling Vinnies hampers with non-perishable foods and inexpensive gifts.

Donations are invited from Monday 25th November (Week 7).  This year the Moore Street and Vinnies Christmas trees will be displayed in the Parish Hall.  Congratulations to Year 1/2S who successfully persuaded Mr Low with their written arguments to offer a 2019 Christmas Appeal Casual Day.
